How do I serve a third-party subpoena or search warrant on Carfax?

The below information is for attorneys, law enforcement, and other entities seeking to serve third-party subpoenas or search warrants on Carfax, Inc. (“Carfax”).  This information is subject to change at any time at Carfax’s discretion.  Nothing on this page waives any objections Carfax may have to any subpoena or search warrant, including lack of jurisdiction or improper service. 

CIVIL SUBPOENAS

Carfax does not accept service by mail, e-mail, fax, or via its website.  Carfax will respond to valid subpoenas properly served on Carfax’s registered agent, Corporation Service Company (“CSC”).  

Carfax is located in Fairfax County, Virginia.  Carfax accepts third-party subpoenas issued from Virginia state and federal courts, as well as properly domesticated out-of-state subpoenas.  Carfax only accepts third-party foreign subpoenas that have been properly issued and served in compliance with the Uniform Interstate Depositions and Discovery Act (“UIDDA”). 

Providing detailed and accurate information at the outset will facilitate efficient processing of your subpoena.  All civil subpoenas should include, at minimum, the following:
- The name and contact information (address, phone number, and e-mail address) of the individual attorney authorized to serve the subpoena
- The case caption and court in which the case was filed
- State with particularity the categories of documents or information sought
- When seeking information about a vehicle, the vehicle’s Vehicle Identification Number (“VIN”)
- Indicate the specific time period for which documents or information are sought

LAW ENFORCEMENT & CRIMINAL SUBPOENAS AND SEARCH WARRANTS

- The name and contact information (address, phone number, and e-mail address) of the individual law enforcement agent or attorney authorized to serve the subpoena or search warrant
- State with particularity the categories of documents or information sought
- When seeking information about a vehicle, the vehicle’s Vehicle Identification Number (“VIN”)
- When seeking information about a customer account, sufficient information for Carfax to identify the customer, including name, address, phone number, e-mail address, and any other available identifying information
- Indicate the specific time period for which documents or information are sought

COST REIMBURSEMENT

Carfax may seek reimbursement for costs associated with responding to subpoenas and search warrants.  Please do not send reimbursement with your subpoena or search warrant – you will be notified after your request is received regarding any necessary reimbursement, including the amount and how payment may be made.  You can expect to receive the requested records and/or information no later than 30 days after Carfax receives the required fee.
